As I write I am listening to Elk Run And Riot – a Canmore band that is making waves across Alberta and BC, who also happen to be some of the nicest guys around. I find these days that I am not listening to a lot of recorded music, but when I do I’m gravitating towards my friends. Other great recent recordings are out there from Trundled and from Kyle Pullan. (oh – and hummingBird – hee hee!)
Many of the Guitar Mamas are writing songs of their own that deserve to be heard as well. I’m thrilled that these amazing women are stepping out and sharing their hearts and stories this way. It doesn’t matter at the start what it sounds like or what the words say; if you are beginning to write songs (or write anything) the first important thing is to write. As with so many things, it’s not the DOING that is toughest, but it’s the STARTING. The surest way to accomplish anything is to simply begin.
This March, Women, treat yourself to a weekend for you to stretch your creative self, find some space and quiet, and create the song or songs that are in you to share. We will be joined in Retreat by the amazing Lori Reid – songstress and member of The Fates. It is an opportunity not to be missed. If you’ve written 10 or 50 songs – or if you’ve never written anything, you are welcome and you will leave having begun. Details are here. I hope to see you there.
